Chicory Cafe opened in 2005 with Heather Yarbrough at the helm. What started off as a NoLA-themed beignet and cafe au lait joint worked well at its home on the corner of Jefferson and Michigan Streets. The small, quaint coffeehouse experimented with muffulattas, house-made Cajun hummus and olive salad, and soon began expanding its menu. In September of 2012, Jeff Morauski and Phil & Julie Schreiber purchased Chicory with plans to grow the small Cajun-themed cafe into something bigger and better, all while holding onto Heather's already-established strong New Orleans flair.

In late 2014, Chicory more than doubled in size, expanding their square footage into a neighboring vacant space. More room for tables, a bar, a couch seating area, more Mardi Gras beads, a decoupaged upright piano, and a performance stage area complete with a sound system and an often-booked music schedule featuring both touring and local talent. The stage is also a familiar home to weekly live trivia, monthly open mic comedy, karaoke nights, DJ dance parties, poetry readings, Science Cafe, and (of course) one of the most fun Fat Tuesday parties outside of Louisiana.

The past few years have brought beautiful and eccentric and delicious creations--foods, drinks, arts, and music alike. Chicory Cafe now has a very established and successful catering operation, feeding various businesses, medical offices, sports teams (including Notre Dame), and private events. Chicory's coffee game has remained strong--albeit tongue-in-cheek at times--with specialty lattes whose names often bring chuckles. Proudly serving organic and fair-trade beans, as well as supporting local South Bend roasters, Chicory's baristas know the difference between a latte and a cappuccino and will happily tell you all about the French chicory that they add to each pot of the Cafe Noir house drip. The food menu at the cafe is varied, casual, and always delicious: providing something for meat-eaters, vegetarians, the gluten-free crowd, and kids too. Breakfast po-boys are served all day, beignet dough is made fresh each morning, and Cajun food is king. And any meal can now be complemented with a draft craft beer, specialty cocktail, wine, spirited coffee drink, house-made Hurricane, or a Big Easy Bloody Mary.
